DADOWAVE
An ongoing experimental study of how patterns can interact with animation through the means of repetitive cuts in wood.
Taking a simple idea like cutting a dado every 1/8" inch on sticks of wood can become very intriguing once you begin to put the sticks next to each other. Patterns begin to emerge. Making a simple change like angling the cross cut sled or even tilting the blade, or maybe both, can have a drastic change on pattern interaction. Patterns come and go with frame-by-frame animation. These patterns begin to feel like music being played in front of the eyes.

Each set of 8 wood sticks have identical cut patterns. As they are aligned and rotated or shifted, they reveal a new movement of unique interaction as a still frame. Keeping a transition of orientation continuous with each stick, a pattern can be made.
